in my opinion, the trick pulled on them made them more mature and helped them grow as individuals.sometimes in life you need something to trigger your maturity, and i think this camp trip did it for them.they will never forget it, and will use it to grow.
howie develops a bond with laura so much that he doesn't want anyone to find them.he just wants to stay in the woods and live off the land.laura's mother hears of the kids missing so she goes looking for them and finds them.the mother is disgusted with the camp officials. the two of them plan to still see one another

this novel tells the story two kids, laura and howie , who are at a summer camp.every year at that camp, two kids get put on an island stripped of their clothes and left there.this year it was them. them being the kids that they are, they get embarrassed and ashamed . so, they swim back to the shore and leave the camp.going to places to seek shelter, by stealing clothes at a beach,taking money out of peoples cars,and staying in an abandoned hotel room.
