Generational Poverty (Residual Poverty)

Absolute Poverty

So poor that one is lacking the resources to survive.

Situational Poverty (Transitional Poverty)

Temporary state that occurs because of a lost job for a short time.

Types of Poverty

Relative Poverty

Occurs when we compare ourselves to those around us.

Chronic, never-ending cycles of poverty that pass to children and grandchildren.

  • Matrilineal families - lack of formal marriage and divorce
  • Insufficient income - reliance on unstable, seasonal, or day labor jobs, federal or state aid, or charity
  • "Ownership" only of depreciable assets
  • Little social capital/no safety net/little education
  • high mobility
  • Present moment/survival focus
  • School - work conflicts
  • Internalization of blame, little awareness of structural issues of poverty
