Comparisons

"They've got all day"

"They too may have futures"

"In the back of taxis, on the

way to airports and stations"

Language

"walking on the riverbank"

  • The language varies in the two different stanzas
  • "Clamped together" and "soft and powerful"
  • Fake and cliche relationship - unrealistic
  • Intimate - impression the relationship is lasting and strong.

Imagery

  • For the young couple - 'movie scene' romantic setting (looking at the waterlilies) - More of a stereotypical 'young couple place to be. Culture has us expecting most couples to be young/attractive/romantic. The imagery enforces that.
  • Older couple - in the back of taxis - more exclusive and intimate. Imagine secluded/darker setting, but the romance is still as real.

Form

  • Both stanzas are 10 lines long - shows that while the relationships contrast, there are still similarities between them.
  • The sentences are longer, but less flowing, in the first stanza - suggests that the relationship is trying to come across as strong and long lasting, but inevitably they're young and can't guarantee it'll last.
  • Sentence length also reflects the time they spend together - the young couple have a lot of time as they have no other dedications. However the older couple only get limited time together, meaning the sentences are shorter.

Rhythm & Rhyme

Tone

  • The rhythm in the 1st stanza is stunted and flows less - the relationship isn't settled and is unsure. They're younger and generally are more likely to issues or insecurities, because they don't know each other as well as an older, possibly married couple. The enjambment is less smooth and is almost awkward - could mirror the awkwardness of a young relationship.
  • The 2nd stanza flows much better and has more fitting enjambment. This represents the more natural relationship the couple have. It also shows that there are less problems in their relationship, because they've had the time to sort all the issues when they were younger.
  • The tone of the poem is generally neutral, as there seems to be no personal opinions/thoughts inputted from the poet (Fleur Adcock)
  • Instead we get the viewpoint that we are simply witnessing these events from our point of view, so are left to have our own personal thoughts on the situations/matters at hand.
  • However Adcock does seem biased at times - her interpretion of the younger couples is sometimes selfish:
  • "They can see no one older than themselves."
