The symptoms of gigantism include:

  • excessive sweating
  • severe or recurrent headaches
  • weakness
  • insomnia and sleep disorders
  • delayed puberty in both boys and girls
  • irregular menstural periods in girls
  • deafness

The cause of gigantism is a pituitary gland tumor is almost always the reason. When a tumor grows on this gland, it makes more growth hormone (GH) than the body needs.

Treatment for dwarfism includes:

1. surgically insert a shunt to drain excess fluid and relieve pressure on the brain

2. corrective surgeries for cleft palate

3. physical therapy

The treatment for gigantism is in most cases surgery. Surgery has been proven to be the most successful treatment fot this disorder.

The cause of dwarfism is metabollic and hormonal disorders such as growth hormone deficiency.

Gigantism is diagnosed by a blood test that is taken to measure growth hormone levels and insulin, like growth factor 1 (IGF1) which is a hormone produced by the liver

  • late development of motor skills such as sitting up or walking
  • increased susceptibility to ear infections
  • breathing problems
  • weight problens
  • curvature of the spine
  • bowed legs
  • joint stiffness and arthritis
  • lower back pain or numb legs

Life Expectancy

People with gigantism usually live a normal life. The usual cause of death is a metabollic disorder or an infection.
