Lord Durham’s Report

It is possible that the clique was one of the forces involved in the contribution of Lord Durham’s report.

Impact of the Findings:

The Cliques two intentions were fulfilled. The union of Lower & Upper Canada and the assimilation of the French – Canadian.

The Clique did not quite approve the findings because they believed the government would give too much political power to the people, majority of those people being French – Canadians. But in general, Durham's report sat well with the Clique.

The Act of Union, 1840

The recommendations did meet the Clique's demands. By uniting the Canadas, the British population would dominate as the French slowly assimilated with the English.

How did this act meet or fail to meet the demands of the Château Clique?

The Act prevented the French economic and political interests from overruling Britain's. But it failed in assimilating all French-Canadians, one of the Clique's main goals.

Rebellions of 1837 & 1838

They were the political leader . When the rebellions did start, the Patriotes (reformers) fought against the Chateau Clique, who were backed up by the British. However, the Patriotes were defeated easily and Papineau fled to the U.S.

SHORT TERM CONSEQUENCES:

  • 32 people died, 42 were injured.
  • Leaders of the rebellion were arrested by the government.
  • Lower and Upper Canada were merged together under the Union Act, effectively granting the Chateau Clique’s initial goal.

Who is The Château Clique?

Long-term consequences

What Were Their Interests?

The Château Clique consists of small groups of upper class families who lived in Lower Canada.

James Mcgill

John Molson

Grievances:

They didn’t like the political reform and the French culture because the French Canadians got special treatment in the British colony.

• Lower and Upper Canada were united in 1840

• Lead to confederation in 1867. The idea of “French Separatism” was created as a result.

• The Chateau Clique achieved its aims. The British dominated and still do today, but the French culture was not suppressed.

BRITISH CULTURE

They were wealthy business men, bankers, canal builders, and landowners who had the most political power in Lower Canada; they determined laws, punishments, rights of land etc.

Reasonable Solution:

They thought a responsible government and switching French civil law to English civil law would be a reasonable solution to the problems at that time.
