The Top 1 Percent Of Americans Have Only 5 Percent Of The Nation’s Personal Debt

How?

CAPATILISM

Theorist - Karl Marx

Capitilism provides many opportunities for the powerful to exploit the powerless, thus causing a system of inequality.

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/10/03/334156/top-five-wealthiest-one-percent/

Marx viewed society primarily as an uneasy relationship between two groups with incompatible economic interests

The Bourgeoisie (upperclaass)

and

The Proletariat (middle class)

The 1 Percenters

  • The 400 wealthiest individuals on the Forbes 400 list have more wealth than the bottom 150 million Americans.
  • The 1 percent has 35.6 percent of all private wealth, more than the bottom 95 percent combined.
  • In 2010, 25 of the 100 largest U.S. companies paid their CEO more than they paid in U.S. taxes. This is largely because corporations in the global 1 percent use off shore tax havens to dodge their U.S. taxes.

For Example

This unequal distribution of power and wealth goes beyond just money.

What is considered deviant, is not the result of the decision making process, rather the key is being able to define some behavior as deviant is social power.

The “bad” acts of the powerless (like burglary, taking illegal drugs, and driving while intoxicatred) are said to be deviant.

WHEREAS..

The injurious acts of the very wealthy (like the manufacture of defective products that harm or even kill people, taking illegal drugs, and driving while intoxicated) often face minimal sanctions.

CONFLICT THEORY DEFINED

Conflict theories focus their explanations more on deviance than on deviant behavior.

That means these theories address the origins of rules or norms rather than the origins of behavior that violates these standards.

Accoring to the conflict theory, social classes are not the only ones fighting for power...

The conflict view stresses the pluralistic nature of society and the differential distribution of power among groups.

According to the conflict theory, men are the equivilant to the capitilist class. That is they are the holders of power who attempt to reamain in power.

In the United States, these gender inqualisties manifiest in the work force, where woman earn on average less than 80% of what men earn.

Aggressive male behavior towards females, such as sexual harrestment or rape, also express unqual power relations.
