The Tennessee cave salamander is a species of salamander in the Plethodontidae family, endemic to the United States. It has been adopted as the Tennessee state amphibian. Coloring ranges from nearly white to dark brown with spots. is usually found in limestone caves containing streams in central and southeast Tennessee. it is large salamander (4.0 to 7.5 inches in length) with a small eyes, lack of eyelids, wide head, spatulate snout, and bright red feathery, external gills.
