Definitions

Matter: is anything that has a mass.

Element: a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic.

Mixture: is a material system made up of two or more different substances which are mixed but are not combined chemically.

Compound: a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.

Pure substances: are defined as substances that are made of only one type of atom or molecule.

Heterogeneous Mixture: is made of different substances that remain physically separate.

Homogeneous Mixture: has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout.

Solution: two substances that are evenly mixed together.

Suspension: a heterogeneous mixture in which solute-like particles settle out of a solvent-like phase some time after their introduction

Colloid: is a mixture in which one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance.

Emulsion: is a colloid of two or more immiscible liquids where one liquid contains a dispersion of the other liquids.

Mechanical Mixture: a heterogeneous mixture of particles or masses distinguishable as such under the microscope or separable by filtration.
