Religion in the early 1900s

The Social Gospel Movement was a movement brought on by Protestants in the Progressive Era. They believed that Christ would not come until all social ills were exterminated, which included drinking and gambling.

The social gospel movement and Catholic social teaching played influential roles in the progressive search for economic fairness and justice in the 20th century

The Third Great Awakening was a period of religious activism in American history from the late 1850s to the early 1900s

May 27, 1924 At a meeting in Maryland, the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church repealed a ban on dancing and theater attendance for church members.

It was not until the first decade of the twentieth century that the Social Gospel message began to have widespread appeal to the people in the pews. One reason for the shift in public opinion was that the dislocations created by industrialism were not going away on their own. It also helped that as poverty, inequality, and industrial injuries all continued to grow, muckraking journalists began to report on these grim realities

October 08, 1924 At a meeting in New York City, the National Lutheran Conference banned the playing of jazz music in the local churches.

Progressive social Christians were especially important in the national elections of 1912 and 1916

The confluence of Social Gospel preaching and muckraking journalism helped to form the popular support that underpinned the early Progressive movement. Early reform politicians like Theodore Roosevelt depended on socially aware Christians for much of their support

Frightened

War and the economic depression caused many to turn to God and others to turn away from him

In the 1900s, Americans were frightened by the religious threat of the Roman Catholic Church and the suspected imperialistic intentions of its leader, the pope

In different ways classical social thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century all thought that religion would either disappear or become progressively attenuated with the expansion of modern institutions

The Ku Klux Klan resurgence in 1915 included Catholics along with blacks and Jews as victims of their hate attacks

It was around 1900, give or take a generation, that religious fundamentalism took form in reaction to the growing role of science
