Deadly Unna

The Graffiti in the shed

The Growth of Gary

Dumby's Funeral

In the jetty shed there was a lot of graffiti. 'Boongs piss off' was something that bothered Gary as he knew it was rasict and that the graffiti shouldn't be there. Towards the end of the novel the graffiti had bothered Gary so much that he decided he would paint over it because if he didn't no one else would. This event also inluded all of Gary's siblings and they all nted over the graffiti. This shows us that Gary had a lot of respect towards the Aboriginal community and that he was aware of the rasicm happening in his town. When the graffiti was finally painted over, Gary had felt relieved.

After Dumby died, Gary was suffering from depression. Although no one else wanted to go to Dumby's funeral, Gary did on his own. Gary felt that this was the right thing to do. This event helped shape Gary because he had more independance, responsiblility and maturity. As the funeral was held at the point, Gary realised that the stories of the point told in the pub were not true. This opened Gary's eyes up even more to rasicm and to what people thought of the Aboriginal community.

Big Mac's Joke

Big Mac's joke was a racist joke that Gary had laughed at and told others many times. Oneday in the pub, Big Mac had said the joke.

Darcy

This time Gary didn't laugh at all or find it funny. Gary was becoming more aware of the rasicm happening in his town.

Gary introduces us to Darcy and tells us that he is his next door neighbour. Whenever Gary needed advice or someone to talk too, Darcy seemed to be the person Gary always went too aswell as his mum. Darcy usually had the answers Gary needed and Darcy had a big influence on Gary's desicions and choices. Darcy was usually out fishing or sitting on his front porch.

The Grand Final

The Best on ground award

When the Grand Final came, Gary expected his dad to be there watching and cheering him on. Instead his dad didn't show up. This event made Gary lose more respect for his father and harden up on him. Gary's team also won the Grand Final becasue Gary accidently tackled the Thumper. This raised Gary's self esteem.

The Storm

Gary was sure the best on ground award would be Dumby Reds. Instead the award was given to Mark Arks. Gary believed that Dumby didn't get the award because he was Aboriginal.

The Storm was a fishing trip Gary explained to us. Gary's father had taken him out fishing for the day, but as night came, it was dark and there was a huge storm. Gary's dad was so drunk he didn't even know how to get home. When Gary was scared his dad told him he was a gutless wonder. It shows that Gary's father didn't care about Gary.

Football

In the beginning of the novel we learn that Gary is in the local football team. He is going to be the first ruck since the other ruck isn't playing anymore. Since there isn't much to do in the small town, Gary plays football to give himself something to do.

Being first ruck did put a lot of pressure on Gary and it made him more nervous. If Gary did something wrong he could be labeled as a gutless wonder.

The following events helped lead Gary into the Person he become.
