Present Simple

Descibes

  • fact
  • habit

Describes

  • something that's going on now
  • annoyance (ergernis)
  • Describes a fact (feit) or a habit (gewoonte).
  • Pay attention to words like: always, never, often!

- ing form

• She often walks to school.

• I always jog in the morning.

• It never snows in September.

• They play tennis every Friday evening.

I play handball versus I am playing handball.

But: they are playing tennis means something else!

Present Continuous

He makes a mess of things

versus

he is always making a mess of things.

Making the present continuous:

a form of to be + verb + -ing

Used when:

  • Something is happening now (at the moment)
  • I am walking to the park right now.
  • Kate’s having a bath now.
  • They are playing golf at the moment.

  • You are annoyed (geërgerd)
  • He is always making a mess of things!
  • You can never stop chatting.
  • Some people are always late!
