5S of Good Housekeeping Orientation

2. Start with the most suitable "S"

Five Japanese words beginning with 'S‘;

it focuses on effective work place organization and standardized work procedures.

  • IF YOU MAKE HASTE, IT IS EASY TO FAIL.
  • For a big organization, start with pilot area.
  • Trial practice at model area and model machine.

It simplifies the work environment, reduces waste and non-value activity while improving quality efficiency and safety.

Objectives:

DEFINITION

  • To educate and train all employees of Halcyon Marine Healthcare Systems on how to apply and implement the 5S of Good Housekeeping principles in our respective work areas.

WHAT IS 5S?

  • To create 5S Steering Committee that will ensure the Clinic’s compliance to 5S.
  • To acquire 100% participation of employees to maintain a clean, organize and systematic working environment.

The Benefits of the 5S Program:

Seven Wastes

3. Non-Effective Motion of the workers, machines, and transport (e.g. due to the inappropriate location of tools and parts) is wasted. Instead of automating wasted motion, the operation itself should be improved.

1. Overproduction is to produce more than

demanded or to produce more than demanded or to produce it before it is needed. It is visible as a storage material. It is the result of producing to speculative demand.

4. Waiting for a machine to process should be eliminated. The principle is to maximize the utilization/efficiency of the worker

2. Transportation does not add any value to the product. Instead of improving the transportation, it should be minimized or eliminated.

Seven Wastes

5. Processing waste should be minimized. All unnecessary processing (non value added) steps should be eliminated. Combine steps where possible.

6. Inventory or Work In Process (WIP) is material between operations as a result of large lot production or processes with long cycle times. This creates excess inventory that requires extra handling, space, interest charges, people, and paperwork.

7. Defects. Making defective products is pure waste. Focus on preventing the occurrence of defects instead of finding and repairing defects.

First 3S ( SEIRI, SEISO, SEITON) are ACTION WORDS.

4th S- SEIKETSU is a CONDITION

EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION:

Encourage participation by EDUCATION then by DEMONSTRATION,

5th S- SHITSUKE is accordingly CULTURE

later through ACTUAL PRACTICE, and RECOGNITION.

5S Promotes conducive working area...

Set the BIG CLEAN UP DAY.

  • Reduced space requirements and storage costs.
  • Reduced cycle times.
  • Reduced machine down time.
  • Simplified work environment.
  • Improved employee moral and pride by creating a pleasant workplace.

5S

is one of the most basic tools

for improving productivity

and efficiency!

  • For messy workplace, start from first S - Seiri
  • For troublesome machine, first conduct SEISO then do SEISO inspection.

Does this describe your work areas?

  • Excess items and machines make it difficult to improve process flow
  • Equipment is dirty and a collection point for miscellaneous materials.
  • Needed equipment and documents are difficult to find.
  • Everyone can participate in "SEISO"
  • But they need to be familiar with machines, proper cleaning procedures and tools.
  • Improved profitability and efficiency by reducing time wasted looking for tools and equipment.
  • Improved quality.
  • Achieve work standardization.
  • Decreased changeover time.
  • Improves daily and shift start-up times.
  • Improved safety.

Key Points in the implementation of 5S

1. Start small and easy, proceed slowly but steadily.

SEISO inspection requires specialists.

3. Only 1,2 ,& 3 S are enough for the initial practice, not all 5S.

After

  • Space is crowded with parts and tools
  • Unneeded items are stacked between workers.
