-AGE 12-Gabby met coach Laing Chow, another olympic winning medalist gymnast's former coach, and decided she wanted him to train her.
-AGE 14-Made difficult decision to leave her family & move to West Des Moines, Iowa to train with him.
-a kind family, that she wasn't familiar with before, had volunteered to be her host family as she stayed there to practice.

When did she begin gymnastics training?
-Often, terribly bullied/made fun of at many of her gymnastics practices.
-Her dad was deployed overseas as a member of the Air National Guard.
-Couldn't afford many of the gymnastics lessons.
-Mother was struggling to make ends meet as a single mom.
-Another family she got close with helped provide stability.
-Her siblings had offered to quit their sports so they could pay for Gabby's gymnastics.
-Began in April 2002.
-At the age of six.
-Won her first championship by the time she was at age 8.
-Was a part of the U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team @ the Summer Olympics in 2012.
-Her team won the gold medal.
-First African American to win gold in the individual all-around event!
