How does it work?

  • Food enters the mouth, where it is chewed and broken down by saliva.
  • the substance than travels down the esophagus and into the stomach.
  • After the stomach, the food travels through the small intestine which absorbs the nutrients in the food, with help from the liver and pancreas.
  • Lastly, any unused materials is exited out of the body through the anus.

So, what does this have to do with Homeostasis?

The Digestive System and Homeostasis

Definition: Homeostasis

This all links to a concept called feedback.

what it is, how it works, and why it's important.

The Digestive System

"a relatively stable state of equilibrium or a tendency toward such a state between the different but interdependent elements or groups of elements of an organism, population, or group" Merriam-Webster, 2011.

Negative Feedback:

The digestive system is responsible for the transport of foods and nutrients that supply our body with energy.

A change occurs in the body, and the body tries to stop, or reverse the change. Ex. Blood Pressure.

How does this apply to the human body?

Our bodies naturally seek homeostasis, as it is required for a healthy state. Unbalance in our bodies would lead to internal and external damage, plus the opening up to disease and sickness.

Positive Feedback:

A change occurs in the body, and the body increases

or supports the change. Ex. Blood Clotting

Positive feedback-

- The inactive enzyme Pepsinogen is converted to pepsin to help degrade proteins. The body pushes the production of the enzyme as needed for digestion.

Negative feedback-

-When the body is done digesting food, acid is no longer needed. The body uses hormones and nervous impulses to activate the acid creation as needed.
