The ADFGVX cipher was the most famous field cipher used during World War I by the Germans it was transmitted through morse code. It is a substitution cipher mixed with a transposition cipher. The substitution part of the cipher requires a modified polybius square that is 6 by 6 and single columnar transposition to solve. The cipher was discovered on March 5th 1918 by Fritz Nebel a german officer, the cipher was made more complicated from the original version ADFGX The cipher text only uses 6 letters. This cipher is not being used anymore because of the Painvin trick was used to crack the ADFGX cipher. The cipher was cracked in early june of 1918
