Biography
Avi's actual name is Edward Irving Wortis and was born in 1937 in the city of New York, but was raised in Brooklyn. Avi's twin sister gave him the nickname, Avi, to him when they were little.
As a child Avi was shy and not into sports. Instead he loved to read and play games of imagination.
In elementary school Avi did well in science, although he was not a very good writer. Once he went into High School, he even failed all of his classes. After that, his parents put him in a small school that specialized with reading and writing.
Even after those setbacks, he still wanted to become a writer. His family partially influenced this since writing was important to them. Avi wanted to prove that he could write, but it took years until he got a book published.
His life also influenced his writing a lot.
For about 25 years, he worked first at the New York Public Library, then at Trenton State College in New Jersey. His life has been with, around, and for books.
