Becoming the National Anthem

Lyrics

"The Star Spangled Banner" was published in a number of newspapers at the time, but by the Civil War it had become one of the most popular patriotic songs of the United States. It wasn't until 1931, when President Hoover signed an act that offically made it our national anthem.

The national anthem consists of four verses, but on almost every occasion only the first verse is sung. The text of the poem was set to a popular melody of the time, " To Anacrean in Heaven".
