Thomas Selkirk

British aristocrat Thomas Selkirk purchased 300,000 square kilometers of land owned by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1811. He wanted to create a new colony. His efforts resulted in the creation of the Red River settlement in 1812. Scottish and Irish settlers, including three Swedes lived here.
