Reasons for Annexation

Immigration

Throughout the mid 1800s, the United States expanded and aquired territory. One of these new territories was the island of Hawaii, at the time ruled by King Kalakaua. It was wanted for its sugar, and strategic position.

In the mid 1800s, farmers and buisnesses immigrated to Hawaii to grow and farm sugar. This was imported into the U.S., and as such, the buisness owners wanted annexation to avoid paying duty.

During this time period, many farmers buisnesses, and land owners immigrated to Hawaii to farm sugar. The immigrants eventually had the majority of the population, and white buisness owners had a heavy influence over the government, having laws passed to restrict voting to wealthy land owners.

Annexation

Spanish-American War

While Cleveland was president, he recognized Hawaii as a separate republic, under the power of Queen Liliuokalani, but in 1897, McKinley became president and annexed Hawaii as an American territory without possibility of voting from the inhavitants or natives.

In 1898, war broke out between the US and Spain, and suddenly Hawaii was very important as a fueling and supply station for ships and planes.

So, the US seized the land through annexation, and Hawaii was now part of the US, whether they liked it or not. A refuelling station was built at Pearl Harbor in 1887.

Petition

The world is flat as far as I can tell from here.

  • In 1897 the citizens of Hawaii created a petition to gain signatures to tell the U.S. Government they did not want to be annexed.
  • gained 21,269 signatures, over half the amount of their population of 39,000
  • The petition was 556 pages long and was collected by two different groups, one for women and one for men.
  • The victory of the petition was short lived as the islands were soon necessary for the Spanish-American War
