Through my research, my opinion of this old type of architecture has improved dramatically from my first interpretation.
Old colonial just in itself is bland and simple. Adding Gothic Picturesque makes it come alive, in a gloomy way
The actual construction and attention to detail is very impressive. Every wall has something covering or scaling it. This is due to the materials used to give it the impression of being old/aged
The structure itself is complex, with out of the ordinary pillars, roofings and walls that would require extensive knowledge in building, even more so than the knowledge to build an average old colonial house.
The overall design always looks dramatic and magnificence looking as though it takes a lot of pride of itself through all the agedness and complexity. These characteristics is what I admire about the architectural form

It is best described as an old colonial interpretation of the middle ages due to it’s castle like exterior.
It is seen as a gloomy, old and some times creepy type of architecture, displaying dark colors and very simple shapes to its exterior.
Back when it was first developed, it was a new fresh and interesting design concept that moved away from the simplicity of the average old colonial building.
Very often seen in large estates where there is a vast amount of land. This allows a vast amount of visibility for anyone viewing it.
The idea of this type of architecture is that it’s supposed to look old and somewhat worn out, like it has stood there for the ages. It gives a sense of magnificence that the viewer would admire.
Edward Blore was an architect that dominated as being the best of architects England had to offer in the early 19th century.
He was born on 1789 in Derby (England) to where he was originally thought to follow his father in becoming topographer. This changed as he discovered his aptitude for architecture.
A majority of his early architecture career involved mostly old colonial Gothic picturesque as he designed the before-mentioned, Government House.
He also designed a handful of churches which adopted his Gothic architecture designs such as St John the Baptist Church.
He also went further to try further styles such as ‘Norman Architecture’, which furthered his career and reputation.
Another interesting fact about this famous Gothic enthusiast is that he were one of the main architects to create Buckingham Palace.
Old colonial architecture is a type of building design that has been brought over by settlers which is similar to the type of construction that takes place in the region they come from.
Australia’s old colonial architecture originates from England as their settlers first established a colony here in 1788.
Old colonial architecture has been used ever since, and is still used today, although, less often than before.
This architecture style was very popular in the 1800’s because it were simple, it works, and it can be relatively cheap because of its simplicity.
Throughout time, this type of architecture has become somewhat vague, and has managed to develop sub categories that more accurately identifies a building that is labelled as being old colonial – leading to this topic: Old Colonial Gothic Picturesque
The Government House was erected in 1845 (started building in 1837) In the Royal Botanic Gardens of Sydney.
The structure was originally planned by a man by the name of Francis Greenway, however was actually later on built by an already famous architects named Edward Blore (1789 - 1879) and Mortimer Lewis (1796 – 1879)
This was an extremely complex project as seen by the image of it, which is why the project took so much delay from when the idea was brought up.

This is one of the easiest buildings of gothic picturesque to look at and understand. This is because of the easy to identify towering pillars that extend over the roof making them look like lookout post that medieval castles are known for.
The use of colours are used to benefit that old and musky look of the structure. The combination of dirty white and light bronze compliment each other making the structure look almost ‘royal’ itself.
Because the land itself is quite big, the appeal of the building is enhanced as it can be analysed from all sides. This is appropriate because the building is detailed all around it.
