The San Antonio Abandoned Mental Hospital opened on April,6,1892 as the "Southwestern Insane Asylum " . It occupied 640 acres and was capable of supporting up to 500 patients .
No one knows for sure why everyone left ,but there are theories .
1.) The doctors and nurses didn't treat the patients well so they got shut down . I think this can happen for real . Because if someone caught them the doctors could get in trouble .
2.) Closed due to lack of funding . I think this is the most logical one , because it shut down in 1996 so there could have been new inventions , and people wouldn't want to donate money for old inventions anymore .
3.) The doctors went crazy and killed everyone . I dont think this is true because this would be all over the internet and it would be easy to find newspaper articles .
Its no wonder people think the hospital is haunted , the hospital did electroshock therapy ( which is when doctors shot bolts of lightning into patients brains ) . Many patients died because of this most of them are buried in unmarked graves behind the buildings .
In 1996 though something strange happened : everyone left in a hurry . Even today there's files and paperwork strew on the floor . And no one knows why they suddenly left or where they went .
But as times changed the name was changed to the San Antonio State Hospital . By 1940 it grew to 2,732 patients and 450 employes . The hospital also did electroshock therapy ( which is when doctors shot bolts of lightning into patients brains ) . Many patients are buried in unmarked graves behind the buildings .
But don't try to go inside because its heavily guarded and if caught trespassing you could get a heavy fine and or go to jail . Plus there's a man across the street who fires a warning shot from a shotgun if he see you .
