Angela's Ashes was about Frank Mccourt surviving his miserable childhood. This story was a long, unfolding flashback. It added to the overall feel of the situation McCourt is discussing. He added in various conversations or descriptions to give readers a better idea of how things were like for poor Irish families.
"We don't laugh, there is no more bread and were hungry, the four of us." Frank Mccourt was remembering when him and his siblings were hungry. This made the reader picture the scene in his/her head.
The flashback is used to create suspense in a story, develop a character, or structure the narration. Example: " I walked out of the room, and saw the portrait of my mother in the otherwise empty hallway. *I remembered, years ago, my father would stare mindlessly at it for minutes, sometimes hours, before a bird chirping would awaken him from his trance.* Without warning, a bird chirped, and I immediately tore my eyes away from that portrait."
Movies have been the most dominant in having flashbacks. For example, Forrest Gump. In this movie, the character Forrest Gump, was talking about major events that happened in his life. These flashbacks helped the viewer understand the character of Forrest Gump and see his events second hand.
A Flashback is a scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point.
One commercial that included a flashback was the McDonald's flashback commercial. It portrayed the character's in present tense and then once they ate a burger, it went back in time, showing their past events that they had had with McDonald's.
One example of a flashback being used in literature is "April Storm", By Robert Dawe. Example: "Phyllis Bussey had a head full of pictures, clear images of her past. The sounds, the scents, the vivid sketches of a lifetime tumbles around her brain like the shadows from a burning oil lamp flickering on a kitchen ceiling." The narrator was describing how her flashbacks were like. This gave the reader the overall mood of the story. The story was basically about a flashback that stood in Phyllis Bussey's head.
In this scene, Forrest Gump's wife Jenny was asking Forrest how Vietnam was. Right then, Forrest gump started to get flashbacks on Vietnam picturing the sky at night, and then comparing it to another event. This gave the viewer the right image to picture and a better understanding on how Forrest thought about it.
