In 1876 the country of Belgium Imperialized the Congo to take control of their supply of Natural Resources.
The Congo was put under direct rule by King Leopold II of Belgium.
The Congo was Granted to King Leopold II of Belgium, the Congo was a “personal” concession for the King, rather than a colony. The King, not the Belgian government, effectively owned and controlled the Congo. Leopold administered the Congo in a notoriously brutal manner, using it to augment his own personal wealth. The Congo’s wealth, which included its numerous rubber trees, was brutally extracted using what was basically slave labor.
The military was sent into the Congo to force the Citizens to work longer hours and those who disobeyed had their hands cut off

At a roundtable conference (which included Congolese nationalists) at Brussels in Jan.–Feb., 1960, it was decided that the Belgian Congo would become fully independent on June 30, 1960. Other african counties such as imbanguism in the west and Kitawala in the southeast contributed to revolts in the congo. Patrice Lumumba and other Congolese leaders launched the first nationwide Congolese political party, which was known as the Congo National Movement. external groups that helped the Congo in it's independence was the Catholic churchand the Congolese Clergy.
The Congo gained it's independence through resistence to the colonial regime, rebellions broke out in several eastern districts in 1923.
In January 1959, riots broke out in Leopoldville after a rally was held calling for the independence of the Congo. violent altercations between Belgian forces and the Cogolese also occurred later that year
The results of Imperialism in the Congo were devastating, if the Congo had not considered the Congoniese as inferior then they could of helped the Congo grow as a country, However that was not the mindset King Leopold wanted for is soldiers. King Leopolds men were only in the Congo to make a profit and succeded but only to do so by destroying and stripping the land of it's natural resources. King Leopold ordered his men to treat the Congoniese workers harshly if they did not do what they were told. The Congo split into the Dem. Rep. of the Congo and the Rep. of the congo.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has a rather poor economy and most of its citizens are farmers. It is a developing country, however, and contains many valuable resources. One of the Congo's main economic resources is copper mining and is the leading copper mining country in the World.
the Congo has been plagued since 1994 with Civil wars and Ethnic Strife.
