The Insidious 2 trailer features very similar techniques to The Conjuring, including opening non diagetic music that, although isn't up beat, suggests that everything is or will be 'better' for the characters (lyrics: all will be better). This, like the conjuring is followed by a silence that builds suspense, a commonly used technique in horror titles. During the silence, a child's nursery rhyme can be heard and the editing pace slows down, again this builds suspense and the use of nursery rhymes is synonymous with horrors as the corruption of innocence is a common theme of the genre. Dull/dark colours again play a role in creating a tense atmosphere, along with antique style mise-en-scene.
Both trailers follow similar if not practically identical themes that are present in the majority of ghost horror films and horror films in general. Suspense is built via various techniques such as the use of music and silence to build suspense, our spacial awareness is tested and our visuals are guided with colour and carefully placed mise-en-scene.
After looking into the construction of the 'horror film trailer' i have decided to explore a new genre. The linear patterns that create a horror trailer i feel are too constricted and repetitive throughout the genre. As a result, i will exploring the genre of Psychological Thrillers.
This trailer is full of techniques synonymous with horror titles and trailer alike. Linguistically speaking, the trailer includes written language such as 'based on a true story' and 'from the directors of saw and insidious,' making the film seem credible. The non diagetic music in the opening of the trailer is upbeat, but suddenly stops and the atmosphere changes, as does the music. There are brief moments of silence which build on suspense and unnerve the audience. Visually the trailer sets an instantly synonymous atmosphere with the horror genre by using dull/dark colours set in a antique style house which is common ground for horror titles. The viewpoint of the trailer for the majority is looking at the mother, as it is another stereotype of horrors to feature a woman character in a state of powerlessness.
