Precipitation

Temperate forests get an average yearly precipitation of 30-60 inches, rain in the summer and snow in the winter.

Temperature

These forests have an average yearly temperature of 50 degrees, 70 in the summer, and a winter below freezing.

  • These biomes are second only to the rainforest as rainiest biome
  • Each of the seasons last about three months
  • This biome is the most populated one.
  • They are mainly by the ocean.
  • Deciduous is a latin term meaning to fall off.
  • In the winter, plants make a sugar solution to prevent their stems from freezing.
  • Lots of animals in the deciduous forest have been hunted almost to extinction.

Climate

Plant Adaptions

Since there are four distinct seasons in this biome, all plants die in the winter. The trees have adapted, getting broad, light leaves to catch the minimal sunlight that makes it's way through the canopy. Although this adaption is helpful in the spring and summer, this makes the leaves more vulnerable to the cold and water loss. The trees adapt further by cutting off water supply to the leaves and seals off the area between the leaf stem and the trunk. With no water and limited sunlight, the chlorophyll in the leaves, which colors them green, leeches out and that is why they change color in the fall

Interesting Facts

Adaptions

Since the animals in deciduous forests need to be able to survive cold winters and hot summers, most animals hibernate or migrate in the winter. Most birds migrate, and most mammals hibernate. Mammals and birds also collect food such as seeds, berries and nuts during the fall and summer and store them for the winter. The cold temperatures preserve the food, preventing rotting. Although most animals aren't seen during the winter, the ones who remain have to deal with a higher risk of predators.

Plants

Other Animals

There are four distinct seasons in this biome, spring, summer, fall, and winter. Winter is cold and snowy, spring is wet and green, summer is hot and dry, fall is colorful and warm.

Other animals include:

Bald Eagle (Bird)

Black Bear (Mammal)

Coyote (Mammal)

Chipmunk (Mammal)

Deer (Mammal)

Garter Snake (Reptile)

Timber Rattlesnake (Reptile)

Monarch Butterfly (Insect)

Wolf (Mammal)

Plant Species

Some types of plants include:

American Beech (Tree)

Common Lime (Tree)

Carpet Moss (Moss)

Guelder Rose (Flower)

Lady Fern (Fern)

Northern Arrowwood (Flower)

Shagbark Hickory (Tree)

Tawny Milkcap (Mushroom)

White Birch (Tree)

White Oak (Tree)

And lots more.

Animals

There are around 240 species of animals in the deciduous forests.

Large Mammals

Deciduous

Large mammals include deer, elk, and moose.

Level Two

The second level is filled with shrubs and small trees. The types are mountain laurel, huckleberry, and saplings.

Deciduous trees are trees that have leaves rather than needles, and temperate forests are largely made up of them. There are approximately 110 species of trees in these forests, 75 percent of which are deciduous.

Level One- Near and on the ground

The first level is comprised of moss, lichen, ferns, and wildflowers.

Levels

There are usually three levels of plants in these forests, but there are sometimes four or five.

Top Predators

Level Three

This level is made up of tall trees like maple, elm, hickory, beech, fir, hemlock, and oak

There top predators in a deciduous forest are as follows: Wolves, cougars, bears, and a species of weasel called a fisher.
