Jim Dine, Exspressionist

(1935-Present)

Media

Dine's favorite medium is drawing. He also often does oil paintings, assemblages, and prints. In his early years he began attaching meaningful objects into his works such as tools. Later in his life he chose to return to doing mostly sketches and drawings.

Jim Dine began as an abstract

expressionist bringing his the emotions he felt about certain topics into his works with abstract depictions. After moving to New York, he moved towards Pop art, but instead of just depicting objects he added to the pieces to reflect what he felt.

Jim Dine was born on June 16, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. When he was 12 his mother died and he went to live with his grandparents. He worked in his grandfathers hardware store, which gave him his understanding of tools. In 1957 Jim received a B.F.A from Ohio University. A year later he moved to New York and got into an art crowd which helped springboard his career, and he was first publicly noted in 1960.
