Questions

If you were in Atticus' shoes, how would you feel if Mr.Ewell came and spat in your face?

In mid-October , Bob Ewell got a job at the WPA and lost it within 3 days due to his laziness. He blamed Atticus for stealing his job and spat in his face. Around the same time, Judge Taylor was sitting in his home when he heard a strange noise . When he left to investigate he saw a dark shadow rtreating into the darkness. Bob Ewell began to follow Helen (Tom's Widow) to work each day. Finally, Link Deas threatened to have Ewell arrested if he didn't leave Helen alone, no more of these events occured. Aunt Alexandra saw the Mr.Ewell had a grudge against everyone and everything that had to do with Tom Robinson's case. The following halloween was held in the towns high school because the previous halloween some kids hid Mrs.Tutti's and Mrs.Frutti's furniture. Scout took part in the play at school and Jem escorted her there.

Analysis

If you were having comments made towards you everyday on your way to work, would you say or do anything about it?

Throughout this chapter there is a growing aspect of mischief and real danger is arousing for multiple characters. Mr.Ewell is holding grudges and making Aunt Alexandra, Atticus and Helen Robinson very uneasy around town.

Do you feel although Mr.Ewell has a right to hold a grudge on everyone involved with Tom Robinson's case?

After decorating the stage for the play Aunt Alexandra was tired and had a prick of apprehension.

"Oh nothing, nothing"...."somebody just walked over my grave"

This demonstrates forshadowing because it shows how Aunt Alexandra knows that something bad is going to happen, but doesnt realize that it is an attack.

Figurative Language #2

Figurative Language #3

Helen Robinson asks Link Deas not to press charges against Bob Ewell for giving her trouble on her way to work

"Just let it be, Mr. Link, please suh.."

This demonstrates dialect because people in this time period do not call each other "suh".

"John look at him as if her were a three-legged chicken or a square egg"

When Atticus says this he is using a simile comparing two things using the word "as".

Chapter's Theme

Settings

  • Town of Maycomb
  • Judge Taylor's House
  • Finch Residence
  • Link Deas House

The theme throughout this chapter is the aspects of the good, evil and human dignity. While reading you notice how the dignity of the Ewell's doesnt seem to occur in the changes that Bob makes towards the people around him. Atticus is working towards the good in his life by trying to eliminate and help those who are facing hard times.
