More and more schools were being built all around Singapore as well as the first airport in Singapore; Kallang airport. A war between the British, Singaporeans and Japanese began after an air raid in Singapore. The Japanese kidnapped an army general called Lim Bo Seng who died after three months of torture. On the 14th of August 1945, the Japanese surrender after a long battle.

1870- Singapore becomes the main world market for rubber. Rubber is used for making bum boats and also for other uses.
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and Alexander Laurie Johnston; their company is called Johnston & Co. an Indian and British trading center. During that year, the British was ruling over Singapore because of Sir Stamford Raffles.
Over the years, more and more ships stopped at Singapore and that was the reason why the very first bank was built; the bank of Calcutta (Kolkata). In 1852, the Indian government took charge of the country of Singapore. By 1999, around 15 schools had been established.
1860- In Singapore, trade became more popular further upstream of the Singapore river.

The population had grown from 150 in 1819 to 80,792 in 1869, the people were mainly Chinese, Indians and Malays.
1820- The first European trading house founded by Alexander Laurie Johnston (Johnston & Co.)
Johnston and Co. was built on today's Keppel road. Johnston & Co. is a European trading buisness
1869-The Suez Canal opened in 1869 reducing the cost of travel from Asia to Australia. It also increased Singapore's importance as a center of the expanding trade between the East and West between 1873 and 1913. Its prosperity attracted immigrants from around the region.
A canal is a small waterway for very small boats to pass through. An example is of how Venice, Italy is filled with water as streets. Did you know that Venice is soon going to be covered in water.
Singapore was being rebuilt during the time of 1614; after the portuguese raided Singapore. Meanwhile, a man named Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles had a passion to have a port in Asia where all the ships will stop at. Sir Raffles went to Singapore and started a business. Soon, he called his friend, Alexander Laurie Johnston, to help him start a port or a go down.
Alexander started one of the biggest ports in the world; Singapore's Tanjong Pagar. Tanjong Pagar is now known as Brani or Keppel.
1832- Singapore becomes capital of Straits Settlements. The port attracts thousands of migrants from China, India and other parts of Asia.
1823- They built the first quay on today's Boat Quay.
Boat quay is a very popular place to go in Singapore, because that is where most of coolies stay in Singapore.
The coolies are workers from Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and China. The Coolies started all the foreign domestic workers to help Singapore in the present.

Raffles of the British East India trading company establishes trading post on Singapore Island.

1826- Singapore, Malacca and Penang became British colony of the Straits Settlements. The straits settlements are a group of British territories located around south east Asia.
Singapore was officially discovered in 1330 by Sang Nila Utama, he officially set foot by the village, Temasek. The fishing village was inhabited by Orang Laut (Sea gypsies). Singapore was named after inspiration from a lion who lived on the island. Singapore developed it's name from the word Singapura meaning lion city.
During the 1500s, portuguese bandits raided Singapore and the sultan ruling at that time ran away to Malaysia and made a new city; Malacca.
