By Evan Weber

This war, also known as the Austro-prussian war, took place in 1866 between Austria and Prussia, two locations that had come to be the most powerful in the German Confederation. Due to this, both countries were engaged in a power struggle to lead and control the German Confederation. Not only this, but the conflict also resulted because of a controversy that broke out over the administration of Schleswig and Holstein. Although Austria was supported in battle by Barvaria, Saxony, Hanover, and other minor German states, Prussia still prevailed in defeating Austria. Since the battle was won by Prussia, Austria was excluded from Germany and the majority of those who sided with them were annexed. This war was very important due to its effects on the well-being and history of several states and countries in the German area and resulted in the North German confederation. It is much like the other wars in this assignment due to the fact that, yet again, it changed the lives of many people, families and countries as a whole.

Latin American Independence: Dominican Republic Independence

On February 27, 1844 what is now known as the Dominican Republic fought for and succeded in gaining independence from the region of Haiti. Up until this revolution, the Dominican Republic was ruled over consistently, first ruled by Spain and then almost immediately followed by Haiti. After finally escaping from Spanish rule, the Dominican Republic originally agreed to merge with newly independent Haiti, but due to the mismanagement of the Haitian government quickly decided they wanted independence. Within the first 22 years of being ruled by Haiti, the Dominican Republic forcefully overthrew Haiti and through the help of Juan Pablo Duarte, built there own new government. Although this took place almost 172 years ago, relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic are still known to be quite unstable. This event was important because it showeed that regions, no matter how close together they are, under any circumstance can engage in conflict. This relates to the other events mentioned due to the fact that all included a specific people that had to face and try to overcome a conflict, and both good and bad things came out of it.

New Philosophies: Industrialization in Britain

Imperialism: Opium Wars

Latin American Independence: The Haitian Revolution

The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) was a nearly 13 year long battle against the slavery taking place and colonizing of Haiti. This revolution was led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, who fought for all that the Haitian people desired: a new social system, to be rid of Spanish and French influence, and the freedom of the black and mulatto people. By successfully ridding themselves of the Spanish and French, Haiti became a sovreign state and set an example to all others that slavery shouldn't exist to the extent it did at the time. The battle was influenced by the previous French Revolution, which gave the Haitian people the push they needed to form an uprising. This revolution is important to history due to the fact that it was one of the very few large scale and successful slave uprisings to ever take place.

The Opium Wars were two battles that took place between China and other European countries, namely Great Britain and France. Both wars resulted in the defeat of the Chinese people, the first battle against Britain (1839-1842) and the second against France (1856-1858). The reason these wars took place is because the Chinese had decided to stop recieving all exports of opium from Britain due to the addiction that followed using the drug, which unbalanced the trade between them and Britain. Britain, of course, was unhappy with the sudden change in their trade with the Chinese people, and tension increased between the two countries for a short period of time. Not long after the trade of opium was shut down, hostility reached an all-time high and Britain sent troops that quickly defeated the Qing (leaders of china) forces and the Treaty of Nanking was made. Still, the unsatisfaction of the British, even following the treaty led to the Second Opium War, which was followed by the relegalization of Opium trade, China being fully opened to merchants, etc. after the Chinese were yet again defeated. Just like the other topics mentioned in this projects, this event changed the lives of many, although it provided primarily negative aftermath for the Chinese.

The industrialization in Britain occurred between aproximately 1770 and 1850 and was a period of time in which innovative and scientific thinking, the sharing of ideas, and economic growth and development all took place. In terms of innovations, the main focus of many people was to reach optimal efficiency and convienence in all fields to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. These goals were met through several inventions that were created during this time, some examples including the spinning jenny and water frame which made manufacturing in the textile industry much more efficient. The construction of railroads and the creation of the steam engine were also very important breakthroughs in the convienence of travel and energy usage. Through scientific thinking and reason, many other discoveries were made, ranging from using coal for power instead of wood to using factories for mass production of much needed products. Without the industrialization in Britain, both Britain and many countries that rely on Britain to maintain steady trade and a strong economy wouldn't be thriving to the extent they do today. By sharing the ideas and innovations that took place in Britain with the rest of the world, society and technology as a whole took a step forward, all thanks to this period of time. Similar to several other events on this timeline, this event changed the lives of many places and people.
