The Barbarian Attacks on Rome's Territories

If Rome was so powerful, how come it fell due to Barbarians?

Rome was not the empire they used to be. They were not in their prime, so when they kept taking so many losses against different types of Barbarians, they had a hard time to recover/fix the damage that was caused. The outer edges of the Empire were defended very well, but the interior had little to no defense, which really hurt Rome. The empire had very poor defensive planning, so it was very easy for invaders to enter.

The Vandals affect on Rome

Remember how we mentioned a type of Barbarians called the Vandals? Well, they were a major part of the Barbarian attacks on Rome, for a reason. They crossed the Rhine River and Pyrenees Mountains in the early 400s, and crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 429. It wasn't until 455 that they viciously sacked Rome. This caused the Western side to be destroyed, but the Eastern Side remained okay, until 453 by muslims.

Thank you!

The Battle of Adrianople

This battle is known as the "Start of the Fall of the Roman Empire". This battle marks the point in history where the military initiative was passed to the Barbarians. After a long fight, the Visigoths defeated Rome in 378, which caused the Roman infantry to collapse. Nearly 40,000 Romans died in this war, including the very important emperor, Valens.

The Visigoths issue with the Roman Empire

The "Barbarians" were much different than Romans. They would dress differently, eat differently, and they had different beliefs. Many Barbarians had plenty issues with Roman Society, especially the Visigoths. The Visigoths, demanded fair treatment. When they were not given this, they acted out, and demanded to have it. This caused a lot of conflict, and led to the very important battle of Adrianople.

Time for our Skit!

In our skit, Turner is a general who is preparing for war. In the red, are Mya and AJ who represent Romans fighting against the Barbarians (Emma and Jon who are in blue). When Mya is silver / gray she represents the Goddess of war strategy Athena, who many would pray to in order to have good luck before the battle.

What happened to the two new group of Goths?

The Ostrogoths, aka the Eastern Goths, lands were taken over by the Huns, which caused the Visigoths, aka the Western Goths, crossed the Danube River, in 376, in order to seek protection with Rome. Although many Barbarians attacked Rome, many would become part of the Roman Empire. Rome would often become allies with Barbarians

Short Description of the Major Tribes

Key Parts of the Invasion

Short Description of Major Tribes (Continued)

  • Huns - The Huns were a nomadic warrior people who came from the east. Under the leadership of their leader Attila, the Huns defeated the Ostrogoths and invaded the Eastern Roman Empire. They then moved to conquer much of Roman Gaul (France). In 452, the Huns invaded Italy. They plundered much of Italy, but did not take the city of Rome.
  • Franks - The Franks were a number of Germanic tribes that settled in the region that is today the country of France (France gets its name from the Franks). They began invading the borders of the Roman Empire around 300 AD. The Franks truly became powerful after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and would eventually become one of the leading empires in Western Europe.
  • There were many other kinds of tribes, but these were the main ones.

Germanic Barbarians from the North were conquering parts of the northern empire. Like we said earlier, a specific type of Barbarians called "The Huns" made an appearance in what is now, Eastern Europe in 370. They swept across Europe from Mongolia in the Far East, came into conflict with those in Northern Europe. This attack caused the Goths to split up in two groups.

Goths- One of the most powerful and organized groups of barbarians were the Goths. The Goths were divided into two major branches: the Visigoths and the Ostrogoth. The Visigoths took over a lot of Western Europe. Under their leader Alaric I, the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410.

•Vandals - The Vandals migrated from Northern Europe to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) and eventually to North Africa where they established a powerful kingdom. They established a peace treaty with Rome in 442 AD, but attacked Rome in 455 when the treaty was broken. Under the Vandal King Genseric, the Vandals sacked Rome in 455 AD and plundered the city for two weeks.

Key Events for the Fall of the Roman Empire

Why did the Barbarians feel the need to attack in the first place?

Many Barbarians were apart of the Roman Empire. However, Rome did not welcome them well due to their unique way of life. Rome would not provide food and shelter, which caused rampaging. They also had no acceptance to their cultural and religious beliefs, so they felt they needed to fight for equality.

Although there were many reasons for Rome's fall, the main reason was because of the Attacks on Rome and its territories by the Barbarians. Some main events: By 300 A.D. Barbarian tribes passed over the Roman borders, The battle of Adrianople (378 A.D.), Visogoths crossing the Danube River, Visigoths attack Rome (410 A.D.), Vandals cross the Straight of Gibraltar, Vandals sack Rome (455 A.D.)

Who were the Barbarians?

Barbarians was a Roman term that was used to describe people outside of the Roman Empire's border. Many "Barbarian" Tribes include the: Goths, Vandals, Huns, Franks, Saxons, and other unimportant tribes.
