William H. Johnson

Jeunesse

William H. Johnson came to New York in 1918 from Florence, South Carolina, and became a student at the national Academy of Design. He stayed there for five years, reading and learning about people like, George Luks and Charles Hawthorne, and readying himself for a career in art. His career would take him to places in North Africa and Europe in search of a permanent residence. It was through the influence of Hawthorne that Johnson traveled to Paris in 1926, where he settled, painted, and studied the works of modern European masters.

Jacob Lawrence

Palmer Hayden

Lawrence was the first American artist of African descent to receive sustained mainstream recognition in the United States. His success came at the age of twenty-four, and lasted almost uninterrupted until his death in June 2000. His best work is mostly in his "Migrantion" series, in which he documents the migration of blacks from Africa to America, focusing mostly on their history in the South. In the last ten years of his life, he received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Arts and more than eighteen honorary post-doctorate degrees.

Jeunesse is about the newness of people's situations during the Harlem Renaissance. The title, Jeunesse, resembles the French word for young, jeune. It is also about the joy that can be found during difficult times, as shown by the dancing , some areas contrast the dark pallet of the painting as a whole.
