Thoracopagus

The Cause

The cause is not known

Thoracopagus are twins joined at the chest.

One theory suggests that after conception the egg divides late and does not divide completely.

These twins will always face each other

About 40% of conjoined twins are in this group

Another theory suggests 2 separate embryos fused together in early development

Most of the time this type will share a heart or lungs

Treatment

Treatment Continued

Depending where the babies are joined doctors will decide if separation will be possible

If you are pregnant with conjoined twins you will be closely monitored and have a team of doctors who will try to learn as much as they can about the baby's anatomy

They will also pay close attention to the less dominant twin

One can over power the other

What are Conjoined Twins?
