A Movie linked to The Social Disorganization Theory

1. Freedom Writers- this movie is about a very dedicated teacher who inspired her students to keep their education and plan their future. Most of the students in her class were involved in gangs, others were drugs dealers, while others were just in school because they were forced to. They all lived in the ghetto and thought that the only way to survive was breaking the law. The neighborhood

in which many of them lived is dangerous without

any social control. They all felt rejected by society because of their race and/or language.

Definition:

The theory relates crime to several components that may influence an individual to brake the law. For example;

  • The Social Disorganization theory was developed by Chicago School (Shaw and McKay )
  • Shaw and McKay discovered that crime was not evenly distributed across the entire city, but tended to be concentrated in specific areas in which crime was constantly reported.
  • The Social Disorganization Theory indicates that crime occurs in disorganized areas.
  • Residential Instability
  • Poverty
  • Neighborhood where they come from
  • Race
  • High unemployment
  • School Dropouts
  • Family disruption

Family and Social Disorganization

Family structures and stability is a process in which what you see growing up influences the person to become in the future

For example;

-Lack of capable guardianship of the child

-Divorce/Single parents

-Violence

Preventing Social Disorganization

-Social relationships and communication prevent crime and delinquency

- More communication in society, means more supervision, or surveillance
