Coal Mining & Water Pollution In Kentucky

Clean Water Act

  • "In 2006 the coal industry actually cost the state of Kentucky $115 million after calculating the costs against the benefits."

  • In 2012, 67 rivers and streams were impaired when given the TMDL test.

  • Coal mining and explosions lead to the waste, dust, and other chemicals and toxins causing groundwater contamination.
  • The Kentucky Waterways Alliance issued the Clean Water Act in 2006
  • Their goal is to hold coal companies responsible for the harm that they have done to the Appalachian region
  • They also want to help find efficient and environment friendly alternative sources of energy

How people help and donate

  • You can donate money to the KWA in order to help find alternative energy sources
  • Create an account with KWA in how you can help today

Most effected areas

What we can personally do:

The most affected areas as of 2014 is the area of Eastern Kentucky.

  • Since the Appalachian area is a main source of coal and oil, multiple coal mines are constructed in this location.
  • Without proper construction, these coal mining companies can unknowingly be contaminating and poisoning people in surrounding communities.
  • Example:

There has been a scandal where the Fraser Creek Mining company had been sending in the same reports every quarter instead of renewing each test to get updated results.

Eric Chance states in the article "Kentucky Coal Company Falsified Water Pollution Reports, Environmental Group Alleges", "that these false reports mean the people of Kentucky don’t know how polluted some of their streams are..."

With these inaccurate results, many streams are in danger of being poisoned by the coal mining industries and effect the drinking water drastically.

  • We can use alternative energy sources for our homes rather than using coal for energy
  • Other sources could be:
  • Solar Power
  • Wind Power
  • Hydroelectric Power
  • Geothermal Powe

People effected

  • People in the Appalachia area in Kentucky are the ones extremely effected by the coal mining industries.

  • Chemicals, acid, waste, coal dust, are all being disposed improperly and are either disposed into streams or seep into the groundwater.

Example: Erica Peterson interviewed an Eastern Kentucky resident about the coal mining damages it has cause to his property and health. The article reads; "For the past decade, Rick Handshoe has watched the two streams on his property in Floyd county turn colors- orange, black..."
