GEOGRAPHY
This is Spain today.
"La geographia manda" means "geography controls everything.
It was easy for the Spanish to explore because they had ocean ports from which they could easily access the ocean.
Another reason that they wanted to explore was because their country looked like a hungry bull facing west.
GLORY
This is Cortes.
The Spanish nobles wanted to make a name for themselves. They also wanted to be known for their perilous journey.
One of the reasons that these nobles wanted to go to North America was because they had no jobs and wanted to stay rich.
Another reason was because they wanted to help Spain.
Those chosen to redeeem this glory were models of the code of chivalry which was made up of military success, loyalty, fairness, and faith in God.
Cortes was one of the people who wanted this better name. He was also a model of the code of chivalry.
GOD
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were known as the Catholic Monarchs.
They wanted to create a Catholic world because they thought that if you weren't Catholic, you weren't going to heaven.
If you were a Muslim or Jew, you had to convert or be tortured to confess or be exiled by the Spanish Inquistion.
However, many jobs were lost because the Jews and Muslims were kicked out of Spain or killed.
GOLD
MONEY MONEY MONEY!!
One of the reasons the Spanish decded to explore was because they were running out of gold.
The needed this gold to support their economy and pay for the troops.
The nobles of Spain wanted jobs and a better fortune.
The reserves of gold in Spain were almost gone.
The Spanish were looking for gold in the West Indies because they had heard that there was a large reserve of gold there. They were wrong however and ended up looking for gold in North America.
These are our reasons to why the Spanish decided to explore.
