Why is teamwork
important?
What is challenging
about teamwork?
In many ways, society
values individual performance
over team performance.
The Ubuntu philosophy is loosely translated as:
"I am because we are", or "I am because you are".
Ubuntu emphasizes the importance of others. How can we improve our interactions and relationships with others?
1. Share your perspective respectfully, and listen -- really listen -- to the other person's perspective.
2. Try to understand before you are understood.
3. Rethink your perspective. Has it changed after listening/understanding?
4. Revisit the conversation and consider possible compromises or alternate solutions.

What is ubuntu?
pronunciation: oo-boon-too
perspective taking:
the act of imagining and feeling what life would be like as another person.
note: this is Kevin's definition.
It's more fun to celebrate with friends...
Our talents and strengths are different. By working together, we can use complementary strengths to improve a program, committee synergy, a roommate mediation, or anything else.

Leading Through Ubuntu:
I Am Because We Are
The Story: After a Thanksgiving dinner with family, person A, who is male, offers to help his grandmother with the dishes. Person B, also male, overhears the offer and says emphatically, "Sit down! That's women's work!"
The Story: Students A and B are at a party where alcohol is served. Later that night, Student A is passed out on a couch, unresponsive. Student B notices Student A and, concerned for his/her safety, calls 911 for medical help. The next day, Student A is angry with Student B, since Student A awoke in the hospital and was just informed that he/she would need to meet with the Director of Judicial Affairs.
1. Develop an understanding of the Ubuntu philosophy.
2. Explore how we can introduce Ubuntu into our work and social spheres as well as into our leadership styles, even in a culture which prioritizes individual achievement.
3. Practice perspective taking.
