I think that theme of the story is true friendship! This is why... At first they don't really get along. Then they start realizing they need each other after all, because neither of them have friends. Then they realize that they are best friends, and that they are really "Freak the Mighty".
How I know that Max and Kevin are best friends is because, on page 1 it says,"I never had a brain until Freak came along." Also on page 32 it says,I sort of just reached down without thinking and picked up Freak."
