By Emma, Tevah, and Joy

The blue words later on, except the present ones, you should really write down as notes!!! Important terms.

Manifest Destiny

In the 1830s- Manifest Destiny- America's dream.

They believed that the US was destined to spread across the continent, thought it was God's will. By 1850, the dream came true. US acquired a lot of land, it took the basic shape of today.

  • 1845- Texas
  • 1848- Oregon and huge Mexican Session
  • 1853- Gadsden Purchase

The Gold Fever

  • The California Gold Rush(1848-1855)-a massive migration of immigrants and gold miners, called Forty-niners, when gold was found in California.

The forty-niners are a reference to 1849, a year in the Gold Rush.

Water Rights

  • Water rights was critical in the dry West, especially the gold mining areas in CA whose water was polluted badly after the gold miners dumped their waste into the streams.
  • Disputes(argument) arose about who could use water from streams, rivers, etc.

The Rocky Mountains

Water Rights

  • But people shared water in their communities in other places of West.

Water Rights

  • Gold miners in CA had easy solution-first come, first serve. (the right to a part of a stream).

Water Rights

The Gold Fever

It began on Jan 24, 1848, When James W. Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California.

The Gold Fever

  • Was a gigantic obstacle to settlers moving West. Got to know this!
  • Example: the Lewis and Clark expedition.

These things we talked about are all about expanding the West and becoming the size of the nation today, called Manifest Destiny!!!

They were some hardships(Rocky Mt's), motives (God's will; seeking gold), and problems(who gets the water) that they had during the time of the...Manifest Destiny period of 1830-1850.

The Rocky Mountains

  • But pathfinders such as Lt. John C. made maps trails for the people to follow.
  • The Oregon Trail in the South Pass is the EASY way through

1830-1850
