Have you considered a ‘digital detox’ as a way of finding a mental and emotional balance?
Switching off all your devices, leaving no distractions to become a more productive, healthy and sociable individual.
Why do we take a break from our phones?
Whether it be peer pressure from friends, or stress due to homework, taking a break will prove beneficial to your mental health.
- 59% of people in the UK feel like they're hooked to their devices
- 47% of people missed out on sleep due to devices
- 30% of people said friendships and relationships suffered due to internet use
Tip 1: the balance- don't give up Facebook for weeks at a time or ignore messages completely. Rather, be mindful of the internet and identify the negative impact it can have on you so you learn how to switch off.
Tip 2: knowing how your social presence may be increasing your negative thoughts/ low moods is a solution where our lives are so interwoven within technology.
Tip 3: when switching off, set a reasonable time limit that is not too extreme. Start at one hour, then gradually increase your detox time to what is suitable for you. But remember a break from your social media won't get rid of negative thoughts alone.
Tip 4: don't sleep with your phone next to you at night, and have an allocated time during the day to check and reply to any social media accounts. Constantly checking your phone will only increase the negative effects of social media such as body image and low moods.
Tip 5: effective time management is crucial: it's easy to get bored without your go-to device for entertainment and information- instead find an alternative use of that time: go to sleep, read a book, try some revision, a new hobby or even take some time out to reflect on yourself.
