By: Sarah Libby, Sean Ledwick, Joe Lunghamer, Eric Knechtel & Anna Miller

Conclusion

The Basis of Society

Living in groups is a more efficient means to survival than living as individuals, thus societies are created

Through the creation of societies we assign different roles to individual's

Since societies culture is reproduced daily the individual's in the society determine these roles

How do we escape this?

As a society we need to be enlightened by the fact that there are no inherent differences between gender

As society progresses this will be eliminated

19th Century

Prior to 1920, society decided that men should be the only gender allowed to vote

1920's

Women were granted the right to vote by the government

This changed societies perception on women's roles

We create social categories, such as race and gender, and then we discriminate based upon them, but in fact there are no inherent differences

1970's

Current Society

Implications

Through socialization we teach our children that gender differences are inherent

Colors (pink for girls, blue for boys)

Division of labor

Perpetuating these socially constructed categories actualizes differences between them

Discrimination results from this, examples include:

Body image
