Traditions

The Oneida Tribe was known for their mask making. They also did bead work and quill work.

The Clothing

The traditions of the Oneida Tribe is the same as the Iroquois Tribes. The oneida Tribe is part of the Iroquois Confederacy otherwise known as Kanonsionni in their language.

The Oneida men wore breechcloths with leggings while Oneida women wore wraparound skirts with shorter leggings. Men did not originally wear shirts in Oneida culture, but the Oneida women often wore a poncho-like tunic called an overdress. The Oneida Indians usually wore moccasins on their feet.

Region that they lived.

The Oneida were thought to have emerged as a tribe during the 14th century in the area that later became central New York. During the 18th century many of Oneida resettled into Wisconsin because of Federal and state pressure.

The Area

The area was mainly grassy and had lots of trees when they first came to Wisconsin.

The Food

The Oneida tribe had their women plant crops of corn, beans, and squash and harvested wild berries and herbs. While the Oneida men hunted for deer and elk and fished. Their recipes included cornbread, soups, and stews, which they cooked on stone hearths.

Their Shelter

The Oneida indians lived in longhouses in the past, nowadays the longhouses are just used for ceremonial purposes.

During the 18th century when the Oneida tribe relocated to Wisconsin they most likey were using muskets and bow and arrows. they also might of used blunt weapons like clubs.
