Pike's Expedition

Lewis and Clark Explore the West

From 1805-1807 Zebulon Pike led an expedition to explore the Southern part of the Louisiana Territory.

He reached about two thirds of the mountain and was forced to pull back because of high snow. This mountain is known as Pike's Peak.

His return took him into Spanish Mexico. Early in 1807, members were arrested as spies.

The Spanish feared he would report back about the Spanish boarder lands.

This created great American interest in the region.

The Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark

Into the Unknown

The Nation Looks West

In the Spring of 1804 Lewis and Clark left St. Lewis and headed up th Missouri River. They took 40 men, most Americans, some French Canadians and an enslaved African American named York.

In July the met Native Americans for the first time. Three weeks later the expedition reached the eastern edge of the great plains.

In Oct. 1804, they reached the territory of the Mandan people, which is now North Dakota.

By 1800, more than 1 million settlers lived between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River.

Most settlers were farmers and relied on the Mississippi River to ship their crops to New Orleans.

Spain controlled the Mississippi and New Orleans.

The Pinckney Treaty guaranteed the Americas' right to ship goods on the Mississippi to New Orleans.

Spain secretly negotiated the transfer of New Orleans and the rest of its Louisiana Territory to France.

The Louisiana Purchase

Crossing the Rockies

The President decided to send James Madison and Robert Livingston to France to buy New Orleans and West Florida.

France was driven from their Caribbean colony of Haiti. Without Haiti as a base the French would have trouble defending New Orleans if they went to war.

Napoleon needed money to support the war effort. He offered the United States New Orleans and The entire Louisiana Territory.

Monroe agreed to but the Louisiana Territory for 15 million about 4 cents an acre.

By the summer of 1805, the expedition reached the continental divide.

Lewis and Clark were deeply disappointed. They were hoping to see a rive that would take them to the Pacific. They instead saw an immense mountain range to the west.
