Gendered Spaces

location

Content/Connections/Predictions/Question

My location is a store loctaed in Covington, Wa. The area the I am invstigating is not a very big space and the time of visit was about 9:00 pm and it was about a hour stay because of grocery shopping and goofing off. I chose this particular place because I go every weekend and also becuase I was able to recognize this place as a gendered space when I first seen the project.

My main question is why don't we just combine the clothing and not make it where like the clothing is gendered?

Why can't the aisle's be together?

Why do the displays even have to be gendered and the flooring and also the lighting?

My space is part of the larger cultural landscape because it is on of the most popular grocery stores in the Covington area because people are often going there for not just food but makeup products hunting items, feminine products, gardening and also electrons, etc.

Patterns and observations

Regions

The different regions the I analyzed in the space are aisles. The region is located in Covington, Wa and can't tell you how big it is or the specific size but I think that it isn't a very big region. I think that one unifying characteristic in the region is material elements. In that area there are many stores and restaurants the generate money to that Fred Meyer because people may need to go shopping eating or doing other things. This region fits well in the city because many people that live in Covington go to this Fred Meyer and also because this Fred Meyer not only sells food but also jewlery, clothing, make up and also gardening products for those have a green thumb. The region that I studied just have more stores and material elements near them and there are many transition zones the walkways into different aisles are examples and also the entrance into the store.

In general we observed a gendered space in our community. In this built in environment we noticed that it was very seperated in clothing items and also in products we use to clean ourselves. In these occupied spaces you could see that there were men in some areas but mainly women in other areas because there were things to offer in the femal are rather than the male area of the store. I also noticed that the gendering starts at an early point in life which is instilled in babies at a young age for example the diapers where gendered.

Explanation of patterns

One patterned that I noticed is that things in the women's area is soft colors like light blues and pinks. Then you go to the mens section the colors are blacks, blue and reds and colors that are a lot less vibrant compared to the womens section. It can also be seen in the childrens toy section there are more things like cars and action figures. Then in the girls section you see babies and simple household cooking utensils in the toys. I think this is showing an early stage of public-private divide which is showing that women need to be at home and handle household things. The content connection that I can make is public-private divide.
