The mythical man-eating monster or evil spirit that originated from the northern forests of the Atlantic coast

what is wendigo psychosis?

  • very severe mental illness
  • the craving for human flesh and blood
  • having extreme coldness
  • going through starvation
  • human cannibalism

During the winter of 1878/1879, Swift Runner murdered his wife, mother, brother, and his five children and ate them. Swift Runner was arrested by Canadian authorities and after his arrest, he confessed to his crimes and claimed that he had been possessed by the spirit of a Wendigo.

In a study of 70 cases of Wendigo Psychosis treatment,

  • 9 sufferers were excluded from society or from social groups in their communities
  • One committed suicide
  • 2 were themselves killed and eaten
  • The results of 15 cases are unknown
  • 10 people actually recovered.
  • The remaining 33 were killed, some of whom consented to their own deaths rather than living out the remainder of their days as a Wendigo.

The woman who was supposedly "possessed" seemed rational, had no desire to eat human flesh, and only wanted to kill strangers because she feared they would hurt her. She surrounded herself with her close family, and avoided new people in order to avoid the temptation to kill them. This was one of the most well-documented cases, and doesn't resemble the psychosis at all.
