Keep Climbing!
This song has taught me that it's all about the climb or journey to your destination. Through all your struggles, you have to keep climbing and not give up. Immigrants (like the grandparents in the poem) traveled through Ellis Island and faced many struggles but they kept climbing through their journey.
Journey or Destination?
Every journey has a destination. Every one might not reach that destination but there will always be one. In fact, you are on a journey right now. Life. Your destination is your future. If life was easy and if you had it easy you won't appreciate your destination as much as if you had it hard. If the journey to Ellis Island was easy, the immigrants would not appreciate their destination as much. It's all about the climb or journey to the top of a mountain. For example, in the letter Columbus wrote to Luis De Sant Angel, Columbus describes his voyages and also his discoveries. He discovered "magnificent rivers, most of which bear gold." His destination was amazing. I look at it this way, those riches and glory were rewards for the hard journey he traveled. The voyage to the islands made him and his crew stronger and more knowledgeable.
Relation to Unit Theme: Living Without/ Journey
"Ellis Island" by Joseph Bruchac is the definition of living without and journeys. The long journey from Slovakia to Ellis Island was not an easy one. The speaker describes the journey his grandparents traveled as "long days of quarantine." These immigrants had to leave their whole life in Slovakia behind. They had to live without their family, sickness, most of their possessions, and certainty.

"Ellis Island" by Joseph Bruchac is about the journey of two kids from Slovakia immigrating to the United States though Ellis Island. Ellis Island represents a new life, your dreams, and freedom for many immigrants. The speaker of the poem is a grandchild of the two kids from Slovakia. He is describing how the journey from Europe to America shaped his life today.
