The First Nation

Critical Analysis

Cree

The reason I chose this art work is because

I find that when you first look at it, the wolf catches your eye but at the same time all the colors running of it catch your attention as well. I find the artist tried to show the essence of a connection between the wolf and nature. i really like the feeling that this painting gives which is kind of mysterious and power of the wolf.

The Cree are one the largest native Canadian/American groups in North America with over 200,000 members living in Canada. Major proportion of Cree live in North and West Lake Superior in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the northwest territories. The Cree language they speak is similar to that of the Algonquin nation. The Cree are a very culturally rich nation with many traditions such as ceremonies of first kill of the season, gatherings & cultural events such as archery, dance, canoe etc. Also songs, story telling and many other traditions which are important and known the Cree.

Thanks for listening!

There was not much background information about the artist I chose because she is still fairly unknown and still developing into the art world. I did however find out that her grandma was apart of the Cree tribe in Manitoba and she only recently discovered this and without knowing she always felt she had quite an aboriginal style. Without being exposed to the art or culture

The artwork i chose as soon as you look at it you see the wolf. and then the colours running off of it and all around the wolf. Also you see the forest in the background and the colours going in and out from the forest. The lines in this piece are surrounding the wolf and are very wavy and absrtact like.

In this artwork there is an emphasis on the wolf because it is the focus and symbol of the painting. In the colours flowing around there is a pattern of alot of the same colours like blues, orange, yellow and pinks. and there is a realtionship between the colours and forest as if theyre coming together.

I believe this painting really relates to the symbology of the wolf in aboriginal culture and how it can represent the feeling of freedom and being with nature. And how the wolf is connected with nature.
