Bibliography

the purpose of the mission

the purpose of the mission was to invade and defeat russia

The operation was going to be a sneak attack but a soldier deserted the german army and told the soviets everything

"On 21st June, 1941, a German sergeant deserted to the Soviet forces. He informed them that the German Army would attack at dawn the following morning." Operation Barbarossa (Spartacus education)

Germany VS Russia

the begining of the eastern front

Conclusian

Operation Barbarossa was a major failure for the Germans and a big win for the Russians. This was also a major turning point in the war and signaled the beginning of the end for the Germans.

leaders on both sides

Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb - field marshal of german forces into Russia but was releaved of command because Hitler did not see him fit to lead after disobeying orders multiple times

Aleksandr Vasilevsky - Russian general who helped plan the Stalingrad counteroffensive

Stalingrad

"As the German Army advanced into Stalingrad the Soviets fought for every building. The deeper the troops got into the city, the more difficult the street fighting became and casualties increased dramatically. The German tanks were less effective in a fortified urban area as it involved house-to-house fighting with rifles, pistols, machine-guns and hand grenades. The Germans had particularly problems with cleverly camouflaged artillery positions and machine-gun nests. The Soviets also made good use of sniper detachments deployed in the bombed out buildings in the city. On the 26th September the 6th Army was able to raise the swastika flag over the government buildings in Red Square but the street fighting continued." Operation Barbarossa (Spartacus education)

Operation barbarossa

Stalingrad cont.

Stalingrad was the bloodiest and probably the most important battle of Operation Barbarossa. It is where the Russians finally halted the german advance and

Operation Barbarossa was a german army campaign to invade Russia . the operation started on June 22, 1941

Tactics

defensive

The advance

German tactics

The germans were using a strategy going into Russia called Blitzkrieg or lightning war. Basically what they do is push into a country in one long column and the branch off into smaller columns. they do this incredibly fast and with a lot of force. the tank units would be in the front leading the charge to roll over the enemies first and let the infantry do the mop up.

Russian Tactics

The Russians being on the defensive did not use such force in their attacks as the Germans. the Russians dug in and waited until the last minute to fall back. eventually this became too dangerous and instead went on the run and employed gorilla tactics and scorched earth tactics where they would destroy everything and anything of use to the enemy before leaving an area.

casualties

"The initial German attacks were wildly successful by any standard everywhere except in army groups south's sector of the front (See Figure 1). By 4 July, the Germans had surrounded large Russian forces at Bialystok and Minsk, 300 kilometers from the frontier. Army Group North meanwhile, was driving north through the Baltic states toward Leningrad facing only weak resistance. In the south the Germans and their Rumanian allies had more trouble, not only were they facing better-equipped forces with more of the new equipment, but the Russian commanders were more aggressive in launching counterattacks." Operation Barbarossa: The Ultimate Strategic Miscalculation (Patrick Shrier)
