Analysis

Conflicts

The conflict throughout this section is man vs. man and man vs. authority whether it is that of a higher being or the church. This scene is the boiling point of the stage, it is almost at the peak, yet a few pages after is when all hell breaks loose. This scene depicts the struggle against the witch trials (which can be related back to McCarthyism).

Analysis

Towards the end of our scene, is when Marry Warren recants her original statement. She claims finally admits that there was no witchcraft. Parris, being the intransigent person that he is, refused to believe Marry Warren. When Marry says she never saw any spirits, Paris says, "prove to us that you can faint by your own will, as you claim" in order to try to disprove her, knowing full well she would be unable to (pg.97). Danforth is also hesitant to believe. Due to his position in the court of law he would prefer evidence. This leads to a big argument and questions the validity of the judicial system (or all authority) in Salem.

Giles Corey is described as an old man who in his third marriage. Giles is called a "crank and a nuisance" yet brave at the same time. Based on this description in earlier text, it is clear why Giles is standing up to the court in such an outrageous way. Corey's old age brings a sense of wisdom as well as a demand for respect towards the issue he is pressing (Putnam is lying to kill off Corey in order to get land).

Begin Analysis

Several characters are gathered in this one scene and it becomes clear the corruption in this town. Mary Warren a lowly servant has been peer pressured to lie and now fears punishment from the all powerful church. Francis Nurse who is more the "voice of reason" is overshadowed symbolically showing that all common sense has been thrown out of the window.

  • Based on the scene from the play and what you have already read in "The Crucible" it becomes clear that the Theocracy has illogical reasoning in the matters of witchcraft or in just general law practice. Everything is based on social status rather than truth. Rev. Parris even says, "all innoecnt and Christian people are happy for the courts of Salem" (Pg. 94). This goes to show that they genuinely believed the trials were successful, fair, and morally acceptable

Intro into Scene

Characters to Focus on

Scene of Discussion

Giles Corey is the main focus in this scene, but also pay close attention to Danforth and Hathorne as well as Proctor and Parris.

Throughout "The Crucible" tensions continue to rise as more and more citizens of Salem begin to be accused of Witchcraft. Here Giles Corey confronts the court explaining that there is an actual conspiracy going on in the town for people who are land hungry and are trying to kill off competition in order to benefit themselves.

Our scene to focus in on, is the courtroom scene including, Giles Corey, Francis Nurse, Danforth, Hathorne, Parris, Proctor, Mary Warren, Thomas Putnam, Hale, and Abigail. (94-107)
