Benefits of Gene Doping

3) Eliminate or significantly reduce gender discrimination in sport

Arguments for Technology

1) Enhances athletic performance

2) Used to treat athletes with severe or permanent injuries .

Dangers of Gene Doping

1) Unnatural and dehumanizes the athlete

Genetic Enhancements:

Gene Doping

The Gelsinger Case

Jesse Gelsinger entered a clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania

He suffered from Ornithine Transcarbamylase deficiency, a rare X-linked genetic disease of the liver that prevents the body from metabolizing ammonia, a byproduct of protein breakdown

On September 13, 1999, he was injected with a virus vector carrying a corrected copy of the gene mediating ammonia breakdown

Jesse suffered a massive immune response, leading to multiple organ failures. He died four days later.

How?

  • By injecting Jesse with a adenovirus injection with the OTC gene into the liver

Why?

  • to cure OTC Deficiency
  • to help infants who are born in the hospital who have the disease

When?

  • June 18, 1981
  • 1995
  • September 13, 1999
  • September 17, 1999

Where?

  • University of Pennsylvania

Who?

  • Jesse Gelsinger a 19 year old man from Tucson, Arizona

Ethical Dilemmas

Case Study:

Against

  • Jesse was not healthy enough
  • False advertisement saying they would be given "very low dosages" with "promising results"
  • Stayed away from original protocol

Gene Doping

What Is It?

How It Works

  • Uses techniques similar to gene therapy.
  • Genes will be either added, or modified.
  • Non-therapeutic use of gene therapy in order to improve athletic performance.
  • DNA will be inserted to enhance athletic performance
  • The transfer of genes or genetically modified cells into an individual.
  • A virus will be inserted into an athlete, which contains a performance-enhancing gene.

What It's Used For

  • It is used to enhance one's athletic ability
  • To enhance muscles
  • To better perform in sports
  • To become superior over competitors
  • To repair muscles

Arguments Against Technology

1) It would violate the basis of sports, which is fairness.

1) There could be severe health risks
