What literary devices are used and there significance.

. Theme 2: Fear of looking feminime.

. Achebe states "The crime was of two kinds, male and female."

. He says that Okonkwo had dont the female crime.

. It was even more of punishment because it the Ibo society fear of being feminime was crucial.

. "A cold shiver ran down Okonkwo's back as he remembered the last time the old man had visited."

. Significance showing Okonkwo felt guilt for killing his son and fear of what might happen to him and his family later.

Pg: 120- " Umofia was still swallowed up in the sleep and silence."

-Significance: This is personification- The significance is that the town was that this quote was setting up for foreshadowing and tone in the chapter.

Pg: 124- " The crime was of two kinds (male and female). Okonkwo had comitted the female because it had been inadvertant."

-Significance: This is Irony. The significance is that Okonkwo always has pride in being a man, because he committed a female crime by not planning on doing so.

Pg: 124- "Violent deaths were frequent, but nothing like this had ever happened."

-Significance: This is foreshadowing . The significance is that death were usual here, but the death that Okonkwo had done was never seen before. He had shot the boy in the heart. It was even more shocking because Okonkwo had killed this boy, and this was "his village".

How does the chapter affect the western perception of African and Africans?

Okonkwo's character and further understanding of culture.

  • It showed how much the elders were respected
  • It showed how the ceremonies were celebrated
  • The crimes were taken very seriously
  • Women were treated badly and seen as lower than men.
  • This makes the Ibo image taint and makes them seem primitive.

  • Ezeudu had three titles as there were only a few who had four
  • The second major event was at the ceremony for Ezeudu's death
  • Okonkwo shot his gun and exploded, killing Ezeudu's son.
  • Okonkwo was banned, and he was sentenced to Mbaino.
